What three things should families
consider before starting a home business?
Lisa’s answer to that question was immediate and emphatic: “Is it His will? Is it His
will? Is it His will? There is a season for
things, and He has a plan for us all. Seek
Him first.”
Among many benefits associated with
running a family business, Lisa and Marc
have experienced the joy and satisfaction
of seeing their children learn, firsthand,
how a business is run. When asked about
challenges they have faced, Lisa explained
that for her, “juggling the business, home
life, homeschooling, and my ‘day-job,’
which I also do from our home office,” was
her biggest challenge. She added, “This
area is so challenging, but so rewarding! I
know that my best days start with my
H eavenly Father, and a plan. In our family,
i t works best for me to be up very early to
tend to my day job work. Once the family
gets up, we move on to the home-school/homestead chores, projects,
H omestead Originals work, and taking
care of our little farm.
“Our schedule is always subject to
change, depending on what our Heavenly
F ather has in mind for us. My husband
works at home too, so later in the morning
I come back to work for a while, when he
is teaching, and that is a great visual for
how it works around here: we all trade off
and work together! We really believe we
are blessed with this lifestyle, and we all
have to work together to make it run
(somewhat) smoothly.”
Although running a home-based business isn’t for everyone, Lisa and Marc
encourage other families who have the
entrepreneurial spirit, especially homeschooling families, to pray about starting a
home-based business. Lisa believes that
prayer is the first and most important step:
“We started in prayer, and without it, we
believe that no matter what we do, the business will fail. Being blessed with a home-based business is a wonderful opportunity.
Although it has its challenges, it provides a
lot of fun and is a great learning experience
for our entire family. It also shows our children how important we think it is for us to
be together—through all things in life.”
