For parents of
homeschooled
teens, the use of
textbooks can be a time
a nd sanity saver.
Knowing that your
child is covering what he or she needs to
cover in the higher grades can bring a
tremendous sense of peace to an anxious
parent’s heart. BJU Press strives to do
whatever it can to help parents experience
that peace by focusing on top-notch
customer service, striving to make their
textbooks first-rate, and making sure to
always keep Christ as the focus of every
product and person they work with. Steve
Skaggs, Director of Product Development
for the textbook division of BJU Press,
points out that BJU Press focuses on three
standards as they strive to please the Lord
with every textbook they publish.
The first standard is Bible integration.
Steve says, “We build the Bible into each
text from the ground up. We are constantly
challenging students to look at what the
Bible has to say about their view of history,
math, language, and all the other subjects.
We don’t just include some practice
sentences that reference a Bible story. We
literally build that Biblical worldview into
all our subjects. And we are always
increasing and improving upon that effort.”
The second standard is comprehen-sion-based learning. The company recognizes that students need to know their
multiplication tables, their grammar
rules, and things like that. However, as
Steve points out, a student also needs to
develop critical thinking skills. Each textbook is written with that goal in mind,
and full comprehension of the text
requires higher-order thinking skills. As
Steve explains, “They aren’t going to just
be able to scan through the boldfaced
words to find the answers.”
