Candlewicking
First, you trace the design
onto fabric (top), then place the
fabric atop the design
(middle), then the design is
traced onto fabric with the
needle and pearlfloss (bottom).

d esign, go over it with a black, felt-tip marker.
Place your fabric on top of the
design and, using the water-soluble
fabric marker, trace the design onto
your fabric. Secure the fabric in the
embroidery hoop, and make Colonial
Knots to complete the design. As you
can see from the photograph, on the
design there are backstitches inside
the open flowers. To make those
stitches, simply cover the fabric
marker design with a straight stitch.
Once your design is complete,
wash the piece of cloth to eliminate
all traces of the washable fabric
marker. Then stretch the fabric out or
hang it up and let it dry. After the
fabric is dry, gently iron the cloth.
Lay the fabric facedown on a thick
towel and use light pressure so as not
to damage the knots.
I used my finished piece to make
a small pillow. You also could use
your candlewicking design to make a
wall hanging, ornament, or quilt
square. You could even make pillowcases to display or to give as gifts.
Candlewicking is so easy. You can
complete an entire design in an afternoon, making it an ideal solution for
last-minute gifts.
Several books on candlewicking
are available. Free patterns designed
