If students are going to keep up, it helps
if they have experience in setting up a com-
fortable study area and getting organized
for success. They should know how to:
• Organize a study binder
• Create an assignment calendar
• Keep documents organized on the
computer
One way to teach these things is to es-
tablish a planning and recordkeeping day
at the beginning and end of each semester,
and include your high schooler. While you
work with planning, organization, and re-
cords for your younger students, your older
student can work with his or her own study
area and organizational tasks.
An Organized Study Area
While it seems obvious that an organized
study space can help a student stay focused, students don’t always realize it.
Help them establish a study area with a
comfortable chair, bright light, a calendar
or planner, assigned books, reading log,
dictionary, thesaurus, writer’s handbook,
