My wife, Monica, and I have been close friends with Paul and Gena Suarez, publishers of The Old Schoolhouse®
Magazine, for many years, and it was a great delight to get some grown-up time with them
recently as we attended The Exodus Mandate’s 20th Anniversary banquet together
in Columbia, South Carolina—a place my
family used to call home a few years back.
We arrived the afternoon of the event,
and as I walked around the hotel lobby, I
spotted the keynote speaker for the event,
Cal Thomas, waiting to be picked up to go
to the venue, and I went to say hello. We
had never met before, but he knew who I
was because of my film IndoctriNation,
which he had wholeheartedly endorsed and
whose executive producer was Ray Moore,
our host for the banquet.
Cal Thomas is one of the most popular syndicated columnists in the country, appearing
in hundreds of newspapers and regularly appearing on Fox News and other media outlets. He began his career in radio, TV, and
print at the age of sixteen. He has been engaging the American soul through his syndicated
column for almost thirty-five years.
When I met him in the hotel lobby, Cal
immediately struck me as the real deal. For
one, he looked exactly like he does in his
promotional headshot, which is actually
quite refreshing in an age of public figures
who use retouched photos or those taken
one or two decades earlier (only to disap-
point when met in person). Cal looked and
interacted with me in a very genuine and
Christian manner.
The banquet was truly a wonderful
event. We were able to celebrate Ray and
Gail’s ministry with a room full of friends
and supporters, some of which were our
dear friends. I was glad to see my friend
Karl Priest receive much deserved recognition (his story was featured in my
