TOS: What are the four P’s that help kids
find direction?
Pamela: Imagine a triangle, and there are
Ps at each tip. The first is passion. What is
the student passionate about? I say to kids,
“Walk into Barnes and Noble. What section
do you go to?” If you’re going to the sports
section instead of the psychology section,
maybe you should be looking at kinesiology as opposed to the social sciences. Then
think about proficiency, which is the second
“P.” You have to be good at the things you’re
passionate about. What are your grades?
What comes naturally? And the one people
tend to forget is profitability—to be able to
monetize the thing you’re passionate about
and proficient at. Once you get those three
Ps together, you draw a star in the middle
of the triangle, and that’s purpose—the
fourth “P.” I believe in a purpose-driven life.
When we’re aligned with our higher good,
with what perhaps was our intended reason
for being on this planet, the college major
needs to be in service to that purpose.

Pamela: Now is a really important time
for any parent of ninth through twelfth
