and physicians held in New Jersey in July,
2001, a review was made of children, age
two years old to eight years old, who were
suffering from various speech problems.
In the study, the children were given fish
oil supplements containing a mixture of
omega- 3 and omega- 6 fatty acids. Speech-language pathologists who monitored the
children’s progress reported significant improvements within just a few weeks. The
improvements they noted were not only
in the children’s ability to talk, but also in
their behavior and their ability to focus.
These children had speech challenges ranging from mild speech delay and articulations issues, to apraxia of speech with accompanying hypotonia (low muscle tone),
sensory integration issues, and motor planning (spatial issues). All of these issues were
found to have improved with omega- 3 and
omega- 6 fatty acids (EFA supplementation). The detailed reports of their study
can be found in the paper, Verbal Apraxia/
Dyspraxia and Essential Fatty Acid Supplements: A New Potential Therapeutic
Intervention.
Dr. Marilyn Agin, M.D., medical director
of the New Jersey-based consortium said,
“The results were dramatic.” They strongly
suggest that specific EFA supplementation
combined with speech and occupational
therapy could become the treatment of
choice in multi-faceted communication
disorders.
One last thought parents of children
with both speech delay, and “conversational
speech” disorders might consider, is the
work of famed pediatric neurologist, Dr.
David Perlmutter. In his book, Brain Maker,
he gives many case histories of his young
patients who gained speech after using all
natural interventions, such as probiotics
and other “gut healing” remedies. In fact,
in his website, www.drperlmutter.com, parents will be able to watch actual videos that
parents have submitted, showing their child
struggling to string any words together at
all . . . or being totally non-verbal, to becoming very verbal in a matter of months,
using some very natural interventions that
are readily available.
Each of these three solutions will work
synergistically to help your child. A discus-
sion with your child’s health professional
will likely yield even more ideas for you
to pursue. God has many ways to bring
healing to our children. We are so grateful
for each and every one of them.
