Creative is the new intelligent. In 2011, the world population hit 7 billion—up 1 billion in just twelve years. The expo-
nential human growth is not a bad thing,
as some would have us believe. After all,
God said, “Be fruitful and multiply, and
replenish the earth” (Genesis 1: 28). But
it does bring new challenges, and solu-
tions to those challenges will not come
from what we already know, they will
come from what we can imagine, what
we can create, with the amazing capacity
that God has given us.
As homeschoolers, our job is to pre-
pare our children for their role in this
world. Regardless of what each child is
called to do, every one of them is capable
of solving problems and serving people
wherever God plants them. And to do
those things well in the 21st century,
they will need to think creatively. So the
question for homeschool parents is, how
can we cultivate creativity?
Renowned artist Pablo Picasso might
have asked a different question. He said,
“Every child is an artist. The problem is
to remain an artist once we grow up.” So
perhaps Picasso would ask, “How can
we nurture the creativity that is already
there?” That perspective makes sense in
light of who we are in God. We are crea-
ted in His image, and He is the Creator of
