Is there one? Consider financial options for college with your students
and parents. Attendance at local and
state schools is usually more cost effective than the option of going across

and;perhaps;at;the;local;bank.;Will;stu-dent;loans;be;needed?;Should;a;weekly
or monthly amount of money be put
away at this point?
•;In;some;states,;such;as;Connecticut,
the;PSAT;(precursor;to;the;SAT,;to;de-lineate;strengths;and;weaknesses);is;of-fered in tenth grade. Other states, such
as;New;York,;offer;it;in;eleventh;grade.
Ask your school counselor if taking
this test is common policy for your
town, county, or state. You may also go
to;College;Board;online;to;see;if;there
is a test available that your students can
take;;these;tests;are;often;offered;in;the
fall.;This;is;true;for;the;PLAN;as;well,
which;is;the;ACT’s;PSAT;equivalent
and includes a handy career inventory
profile.;The;PSAT;information;can;be

• Persuade students to have meaningful summer experiences. Travel, go to
camp,;volunteer,;work,;take;part;in;en-richment;initiatives,;and;don’t;forget;to
have a little fun!
Eleventh Grade: Buckle Down!
•;Tests;and;more;tests!;It;is;time;to;take
the SAT or ACT or both. Your students
may;take;it;more;than;once.;Many;col-leges;do;superscore.;The;College;Board
is at www.collegeboard.org, and the
ACT is www.actstudent.org.
•;Try;the;free;Big;Future;software;on;the
College;Board;website;with;your;stu-dents;as;well.;It;is;a;college;matchmak-ing;tool;that;includes;surveys;to;refine
the college search.
•;Don’t;forget;to;explore;AP;exams;when
applicable, as well as SAT II Subject tests.
•;Have;students;continue;to;take;a;va-
riety;of;courses.;Stick;with;a;few;that
show commitment and continuity,
i.e., Spanish class for three consecu-
tive;years,;or;Art;levels;1,;2,;and;3.;The
transcript;will;reflect;a;dedication;to
a;particular;intellectual;pursuit.;Band
counts as well! Of course, do not let
students lag on the core classes and
graduation requirements.
•;Ask;students;to;attend;college;fairs;and
take;trips;to;visit;campuses.;Get;busi-
ness;cards;and;college;info,;and;make
eye contact with local admissions
representatives.;Ask;your;students;to
make;note;of;their;likes;and;dislikes
about the college campus, course offer-
ings, majors, people, atmosphere, and
even food when visiting a college. Have
tours with students. Remind them to
sit in on a live class and to request ma-
terials from college websites.
•;Tell;students;to;stay;focused;on;school-work;and;maintain;a;solid;grade;point
average.
•;Enrollment;in;a;summer;enrichment
program or study abroad program is
eye opening. Have students research
universities that offer classes and college experiences for juniors during the
summer.
• How about developing work ethics?
Taking part in a community project
or;finding;a;part-time;job;at;the;pool,
town park, or a store offers reality-based learning. Saving money for college or simply learning to earn and
budget;money;is;a;valuable;life;skill.
• Explore majors. What areas of academics inspire your students?
• Refine the college lists by the summer before senior year; which school
is;the;“Early;Decision”;school,;if;any?
Will;students;apply;to;some;schools’
“Early;Action”;to;increase;chances;of
acceptance? Or are many of the school
choices “Regular Decision” or “
Roll-ing”?;When;are;the;deadlines?;Make
active lists.
