Language Arts
Take;a;week;from;your;regular;language
arts;and;create;a;school;newspaper.;Let
your students’ imaginations take the
course,;but;if;they;are;stumped,;suggest
advice;columns,;news;stories,;and;clas-
sifieds.;This;is;a;fun;unit;study;that;can
be;done;every;couple;of;months.;Lewis
Carroll,;the;author;of;Alice’s Adventures
in Wonderland, used to entertain his
many;siblings;and;parents;with;a;fam-
ily;newspaper.;It;was;in;this;newspaper
that;he;proved;a;clock;that;has;stopped
working;is;more;accurate;than;one;that
has;fallen;behind.;After;all,;he;reasoned,
the;stopped;clock;tells;the;correct;time
twice each day while the other clock
never;does.;Lewis;Carroll;was;encour-
aged to allow his imagination to run
free. While the poets in his day were
using their words to teach children,
Carroll;wrote;nonsensical;poems;with
words that made little sense. He even
made;up;a;few;words;like;jabberwocky!
It;is;important;not;to;use;your;chil-
dren’s;creative;work;as;an;opportunity;to
correct;spelling;mistakes.;Marking;it;up
with;red;correction;notes;is;a;sure;way;to
defeat;them;and;extinguish;that;fragile
spark;of;creativity.;Allow;them;to;read
it;to;you.;They;will;hear;their;mistakes
and;(eventually);want;to;correct;them
on;their;own.;Creative;writing;is;separate
from;language.;Do;not;confuse;the;two.
Use;copy;work;to;correct;messy;hand-
writing.;Enjoy;your;child’s;imagination,
and;allow;it;spark;your;own.;It;is;never
too;late;to;create;stories.
As;Lewis;Carroll;said;in;his;biogra-phy,;“Why,;sometimes;I’ve;believed;as
many as six impossible things before
breakfast.”
