Probably the most well known pietà
is one of three large pieces sculpted in
marble by the Italian Renaissance artist
Michelangelo Buonarotti . . . .
of His mother has captured a unique approach that evokes a
unique response. We cannot help but be drawn into the story
and share in the agony of the loss this woman feels, as she remembers the infant son she cradled when He came into the
world. Years later, she embraces this broken body as He leaves
it. This is the essence, and beauty, of the pietà.
