The Laws of Nature
and of Nature’s God
The Declaration of Independence is the “why” of American government,
while the Constitution is the “how.”
In the last We the People column, we talked about how grateful we are that the founding documents for the laws of our land were based
on the Word of God. Let’s continue that
discussion. The Declaration of Indepen-
dence, the United States’ founding doc-
ument, was also based on God’s laws.
I. The Declaration of
Independence establishes the
Biblical foundations for the
Constitution.
Many critics of Christianity’s influence
in the U.S. note that the Constitution
does not mention God or the Bible. The
truth is that it didn’t need to, because
the Declaration of Independence had
already declared twelve years earlier that
its basic principles of freedom, justice,
and dependence on God came from the
Bible. The Constitution merely added to
that foundational document the rules
by which its founding principles would
be put into practice. In 1897, the United
States Supreme Court said:
The first official action of this nation
declared the foundation of govern-
ment in these words: “We hold these
truths to be self-evident, that all
men are created equal, that they are
