Spotlight on
Geography
With so many subjects to focus on, the study of geog- raphy can easily be overlooked in any homeschool. Yet it is important for our children to have a good sense of the world they live in. And of course, any well-educated individual needs to have a good knowledge of other countries and cultures.
Fortunately it doesn’t take a lot of time to make sure your children
are world-savvy. During their primary years, choose a country each
month to study. Research it on the Internet, learn some words from
the language, and have your students color a printout of that country’s flag. Dedicate one meal to trying several dishes that are popular
in that country. Look up the latest news stories from that area of the
world. Finally, see if you can find some missionaries who serve in
that country, learn a little bit about their work there, and commit to
praying for them each day of the month. Maintain a notebook with
a section dedicated to each country so that at the end of the year
you will have a nice record of what you learned.
With older children, find a great curriculum and review often with
geography games. Check out a few of the many great choices available to us and teach geography with the ease of a world traveler!
