phone in case we’re out and about and I
want to know the answer to something.
I can just speak it, and it comes back
to me. And in that regard, it’s cool, and
it’s handy, and it’s nice. But I think with
certain skills, like spelling, that it may
not be the best thing as far as in the long
run. We still need to remember there
are basic skill sets and that we can’t use
Google to come up with the answers. We
can use Google to maybe check what we
think, or want to learn. You can always
use them to learn . . . . I guess what I’m
saying is don’t be dependent on it.
TOS: Sometimes, do you think it becomes a crutch, perhaps?
KIM: Oh, sure. Yes, absolutely a crutch. I know it’s a crutch for me. I mean
I’ll tell you a little secret. Ian had one
of these anagram word puzzles that he
needed to do. Okay? So he’s looking at it.
And he’s got all the letters on the bottom
and I’m looking at them thinking: “Man,
I can’t figure this one out! I don’t know
what this is!” Okay?
So, I’m looking at the letters trying to
figure it out. I said, “I’ll be right back.”
I went over to my computer. I typed in
“anagram solver.” I figured out that what
I thought was an “i” was actually an “l”
that he was writing. So I probably could
have figured it out if he had [used] the
right letters. [Laughter] But the fact is,
I went right over and said, “Let’s fire it
up!” I’m like, okay, there’s the answer.
Was that a crutch? Absolutely! Was it
8: 30 at night? And yes, I was tired.
He gets two and a half hours of
homework a night. He doesn’t do any
sports. Sometimes he has to do homework
between piano and choir. He sings with
the Phoenix Boys Choir. It gets to be a
long time. It gets to be a very long day.
TOS: You need a crutch.
KIM: Yes. Sometimes I just decide
to help myself this way. But yeah, it’s a
crutch. I see it in myself. I really do.

TOS: I agree with that. Here’s another question: Homeschoolers, by nature, have an insatiable appetite for new educational resources, curriculum, brain games, etc. Can you tell us about some of the new products and/ or services that might revolutionize our classrooms within our homes? Who are some of the companies that are leading the technology industry with education in mind? KIM: You know what? I don’t know who the companies are. I’ve not researched this totally. I’d rather just be honest. I can tell you what I do see happening, as we talked about before, are those interactive textbooks. I don’t really know who’s behind it. I can see the potential for it. I can see with the pad that we now have the ability to take handwritten notes and have them turned into PowerPoint presentations and transcribed. [The fact] that I can use Dragon NaturallySpeaking and it will transcribe everything that I say . . . that I can use digital photography to tell a story and to make a photo book . . . that here are now light scribe pens that take handwritten notes [initially on paper] and Did you know you can RENT homeschool curriculum?
