Mom in new scarf with Jacob at two months
By Deborah Wuehler, Senior Editor
July 5th was the special day we welcomed
our newest little Wuehler, Jacob Isaac. For
those who want the stats, he was 8 lb. 14
oz., 21 inches long. Jacob is the very cutest
baby boy on the planet, and I am not
biased. He really is—just look at those
pictures! We are all so in love with this guy.
He captures our hearts and attention like
no other. He is now more than 11 pounds
of pure joy. Just look at Daddy’s eyes
sparkle when holding him. Daddies are not
only important people in the lives of their
children, but they are an important part of
homeschooling as well. That is why we’ve
included a section on Homeschool Dads
that speaks to dads in particular, but moms
also will love to hear what these homeschool dads have to say. (See page 100.)
Since our Summer issue was published,
our family has been occupied with daily
schoolwork and local homeschool group
activities and field trips. One of our
favorite field trips each year is an excursion to Apple Hill here in California,
where we pick up tens of pounds of apples
and of course a juicy one dipped in
caramel (you should see the little ones’
faces and clothes after eating these—let’s
just say, they are a sticky-but-happy mess).
We then make our tried and true apple
crisp and apple-ginger scones to share
with our friends and neighbors. You’ll love
these recipes I’ve included; they are
family favorites at our house. Warm food
with delicious smells is probably why I
love fall so much. My daughter Hannah
has been making her mouthwatering
French bread, and those loaves don’t last
long—right out of the oven with real
butter and local honey! We are not only
going to share her recipe with you, but we
have included an article about preparing
food frugally for the holidays, which
includes another special recipe from our
staff (page 197).
Another reason we love this season is
because of the holidays! Since this issue
covers both Thanksgiving and Christmas,
we asked our staff to tell us about their
childhood and Christmases past, and we
have come up with a 12 Days of Christmas
section that also features some pictures of
our staff when they were young. Find all
this rich history on pages 147–163. And
don’t forget to go over to the Natural
Schoolhouse column (page 190) to find
tips about some inexpensive homemade
gifts for Christmas as well.
