Holiday Cone Boxes
By MyLinda Butterworth
Supplies
• Old Christmas cards or index-weight paper
• Scissors
• Pencil
• Ruler
• Bread knife
• Glue
• Cord for loops
Instructions
1. Trace cone pattern. Open up
Christmas card and lay on table,
picture side down. Transfer cone
pattern to back of picture side of card.
2. Cut around outline of box.
3. Line up your ruler on each line
and use a butter knife to score each
line (that means press down hard
on the line to make an impression).
92
Crease along the scored lines,
bending cone into shape.
4. Spread glue along the side flap,
and press to stick. Pierce a hole
through the center of the lid. Re-crease along the fold lines to shape
the box.
5. Spread glue along the side flap
and press to stick; this will form
the cone. If you are in a hurry, try
using double-stick tape.
6. Thread a loop of cord through
the hole in the lid, and knot on the
underside.
7. To fasten the lid closed, stick a
little double-sided tape on the right
side of the lid flaps. Place flaps
inside the box, and press to seal.
Variation: Using old Christmas
cards is a great way to recycle, but
if you’re a little short on Christmas
cards, try using index-weight
paper and glue on bright, cheery
wrapping paper to the outside,
paint your own design on it, or
cover it with fabric. Then add
decorative splashes with bits of
lace, ribbons, and glitter.
Suggestions: Tired of Advent
calendars? Make and number
twenty-four cone boxes and fill
them with special treats and
hang them on the tree. Allow the
children to take off one cone each
day till Christmas. It’s lots more
fun than opening windows on an
over-sized card.
