Cal: I’ve heard all the rationalizations all
my life, you know: “I want my child to be an
ambassador for Jesus.” I’m all for ambassa-
dors, but I’ve never met any that are eight or
ten years old. They’ve got to be trained and
equipped first, with the knowledge and per-
spective of the nation they’re representing,
as well as the one they are being appointed
to. We don’t train our military in the enemy’s
camps; we train them in our camps, and we
wait until they are mature enough to fight
before we allow them into the military. It’s a
corrupted way of thinking.
People say, “Well, I can’t afford it,” to
which I say, “God didn’t declare Chapter 11,
you know.” The thing about the Kingdom
of God is that you take the step first, and
then the affirmation follows. But we want
the affirmation first, and then we say we’ll
take the step after. It doesn’t work that way.
Joaquin: How important is this issue to
us as families and as a nation?
Cal: I remember something Barbara Bush,
the former first lady, said, “If you have children, they must come first. Our success as
a nation, your success as a family, depends
less on what happens in the White House
than what happens in your house.” I totally
agree with that.
If you’re going to have kids, why would
you let the state raise them? They are being
instructed in things the parents don’t even
know about. A girl can get birth control
from the school nurse without the parents
even knowing about it or granting permission, but if she wants an aspirin, she has to
get permission from home! This is crazy.
Why would you put your kid in that kind
I often tell people to get a good concordance and look up teach and learn and after reading all the verses tell me how the
government schools fulfill God’s requirement. Paul says, “Do not be conformed
to the thinking patterns of this world but
be transformed by the renewing of your
mind.” How can you do that in a government school?
The [teachers’] unions and the politicians control public education these days.
The unions give the politicians money,
and the politicians vote the way the unions
want them to. Meanwhile, they send their
kids to really good public schools or private
schools of their own, they just don’t want
the same choice for everybody else. It’s an
Joaquin: What role does a Christian education have on the future of our nation?
Cal: History is very important. I feel an
awful lot of millennials don’t really study
history or understand it. People are not
really studying history—the mistakes
that were made and the successes that
were achieved—and if you don’t know
history, then you really are doomed to
The world is constantly looking for political leadership that’s going to fix the
