TOS: What advice would you give students who want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine?
Joey: The path to a degree in veterinary
medicine is long, hard, and expensive. As
my wife and I both trekked this path, I
think we would strongly recommend that
a student interested in this career spend as
much time as possible working alongside
a veterinarian to see what life is like in the
clinic setting and then, more importantly,
what life is like for the family of a veterinarian outside the clinic. Taking a realistic look at the career as a whole cannot be

Joey Hajda has had a love of science since he
was a boy. His initial career choice was
veterinary medicine, but after receiving his
veterinary degree, he discovered that he
loved teaching as much as he loved science.
Consequently, he got a degree in education.
His teaching career has now spanned almost
30 years and has included public school,
community college, and homeschooled
students—including his own ten children.
He and his wife, Lisa, in addition to
homeschooling their children (and now
enjoying eight grandchildren!), wrote
Friendly Chemistry: A Guide to Learning Basic Chemistry, Friendly Anatomy: The
Bovine Skeletal System, and their newest
title: Friendly Biology. They enjoy sharing
their enthusiasm for science and generational
homeschooling with fellow homeschoolers.

I have had as my ideal
that students need not
only to see and hear
science, but they need
to touch, smell, and,
if possible, even taste
science to get the most
of their study.
