“Why did no one tell me about his? I wish I had known . . .” I hear those words all the
time when I tell people about the College
Level Examination Program (CLEP).
When I first heard about CLEP I thought,
“Why haven’t I heard about this?” Can you
believe I was on the Board of Trustees for
my school district and didn’t know students
could earn college credit by taking an $85
exam? When I think back to the money we
could have saved for my sons’ educations, I
just shake my head. They both earned dual
credit, and that was helpful. But, if we had
added CLEP to that mix . . . wow!
CLEP exams grant credit for 33 general
education and foreign language subjects
you’ve already learned. They test on college
level knowledge. You have to know your
subject to pass one.
The CLEP choice is between sitting
through a semester of classes, and paying
high tuition fees, or passing an exam. Passing CLEPs save you both time and money.
I can’t fully explain why a 50 year old program has been such an overlooked credit
earning option, but I can tell you that over
2,900 colleges and universities accept CLEP
credits, because they’ve learned things
about the kind of students who pass them.
They are more likely to complete their
degrees than students who don’t CLEP.
They are more likely to graduate on time
and with less debt.
They are more likely to earn higher GPAs
than non CLEP students.

In January I got a concussion. A semester ending concussion.
My doctor said that the intense
headaches I got at school were doing more harm to my brain and that I
shouldn’t continue going to my Christian high school.
That meant I would have to repeat
my junior year, which was completely frustrating. My mom knew about
CLEP exams and she talked to my
school about them. If I passed four exams to fulfill my core classes, I could
come back next fall as . . . a senior!
So, here was my goal: pass four CLEP
exams. We decided to use SpeedyPrep
to prepare me for them.
I started with US History II. Subjects
are easy to access and the program is
really easy to use. I like to study sec-tion-by-section and I set a goal of 5
percent progress every day. I can check
my progress because of how it records
all of my correct answers to questions.
SpeedyPrep’s questions are a different way to learn, but I like learning this
way. The videos are good, and I like the
information they add.
If one of my concussion headaches
hits, I can stop and pick up my work
later. If I get bored working a section,
I open up a new one to study. These
tricks help to keep it fresh, and having
my 5 percent goal really helps. I mostly use my phone to study and I use it
