rightly dividing the word of truth” ( 2 Timothy 2: 15).
But take heart, God is a teacher, too. Je-
sus was a teacher, and his mode of learning
was that He listened to His Father. We as
teachers should be listening to our Father
as well. If we are to follow Him, we need to
see how He lived and how he taught, and
we are to study Him and His Word. And,
He didn’t leave us alone to figure it out, He
left us the Holy Spirit, Who leads us into all
truth. Here are a few ways Jesus taught:
• He lived in obedience to the Father (“I
only do what I see my Father doing…”).
• He taught with concrete examples and
• He lived the way He wanted His disciples
• He taught them how to pray.
• He took every opportunity to bring out
the heart of the matter.
• He called for repentance and explained
consequences of sin.
• He fed and cared for them and others.
• He loved deeply.
If we want the Word of God to be important to our children, we need to model that it
is important to us. Are we in school with our
Master Teacher every day? We desperately
need His wise counsel, or we won’t have anything of worth to give to our children.
“Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for
thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do
I wait all the day. Good and upright is the
LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the
way” (Psalm 25: 5; 8).
4. The Bible is Important for
Do you know what will make our children
thoroughly ready and equipped for life? We
think if we stuff their heads with knowledge, they will be successful. Not so. However, if they are filled with the Word of God,
they will be successful (see Psalm 1).
“All scripture is given by inspiration of
God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be
perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good
works” ( 2 Timothy 3: 15-16).
Is your child prepared for life and Godli-
ness? Is your child prepared to battle sin, and
defeat the enemy of his soul? How can we pre-
pare them for a lifetime of victory? Only by
soaking them in the Word of God, meditating
day and night on it! Let every conversation
be seasoned with Scripture—this is how your
student will find life. And, when our children
face the world, they will assuredly know:
• That there has no temptation taken them
but such as is common to man, but God
is faithful to make a way of escape
• That God is faithful and just to forgive
their sins if they confess them
• That they will find help in their time of
need at the throne of Grace
• That they need to put on the armor of
God and withstand the evil one
• That the Word of God is more important
than their meat and drink
• That God honors those who honor Him
• That they will be successful if they obey
the Word of God
“I have more understanding than all my
teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. I have refrained my feet from every evil
way, that I might keep thy word. I have not
departed from thy judgments: for thou hast
taught me” (Psalm 119: 101-102).
“. . . from a child thou hast known the
Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee
wise unto salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus” ( 2 Timothy 2: 14).
