4.Pick up books at the library on topics your children are writ- ing about so they can immerse
themselves in visuals. Adding in thematic, hands-on activities will also bridge
the engagement gap. Incorporate art by
drawing a picture of the character and
setting. Use different art mediums like
watercolor, pastels, and acrylic paints.
Use the art techniques of pointillism or
marble rolling or even blowing paint
bubbles! Jump into map making by using
legends and drawing icons. Map out the
story plot with illustrations—whether
crude or elaborate.
5.Historical fiction is a terrific way to rope a child into a living writ- ing session! Are they interested in
the Civil War? Then acquiring a book of
army cutouts or a military hat could be
all the incentive they need to dive into
writing a good story!
6.Some reluctant writers need a greater incentive than “mom is going to grade this at the end of
the week” to get them going. Try start-
ing a writing club in which kids can write
about anything they want. Use hands-on
activities to engage your young learners,
including arts, crafts, LEGOs®, sports, or
role play. Have them video each student’s
story, and then have everyone watch it
7.Incorporate Flashlight Theater Fridays, where they can read their storis in the dark with their listeners flashing lights on them while eating
popcorn. Invite other families or grandparents to participate.
8.Lastly, try using a multi-level cre- ative writing curriculum. All the children in your homeschool can
write on the same topic and be characters in each other’s stories. Even the preschool child can participate in hands-on
