seemed impenetrable. Never underesti-
mate the benefits of experience and wis-
dom from seasoned, Godly professionals.
Psalm 49: 3 says, “My mouth shall speak of
wisdom; and the meditation of my heart
shall be of understanding.”
Often musical inspiration is vague and
can simply be the result of a sudden vibe,
beat, melody, or tag line that comes to
mind. Musicians constantly “play” music
in their minds. The key is to write inspi-
ration down immediately! How does an
artist explain the sudden vibe? Perhaps it
is the work of the Holy Spirit. Grant has
thousands of inspirational ideas recorded
in a sound library, and the number grows
Once the style of music is determined,
Grant will sit down and brainstorm lyrics. A large whiteboard can be helpful.
Building on the original inspiration, he
writes all the sections of the song, including the intro, verses, chorus, bridge, and
more. Composing a melody while writing the lyrics keeps the inspiration going.
This entire process is work, and may not
be as spontaneous, productive, or fun as
getting a sudden vibe. During this devel-
opmental stage, a sound is created with
a specific genre in mind. The result is a
pop, ballad, country, dance, or worship
feel. Often, the source of the inspiration
will determine the genre of the song.
For example, a worship song’s inspira-
tion is likely Scripture. If the song has a
country feel, perhaps the inspiration is a
life challenge. After this process, the song
will be notated and mixed.
Grant produces music in his home
studio using the advanced Pro Tools soft-
ware, the industry standard for produc-
ers. He combines traditional instruments
with digital versions, called “plug-ins,”
which provide endless opportunities for
creativity. Creating a studio is an invest-
ment one can build upon as an artist’s
needs increase. Grant’s musical interests
have broadened and developed to in-
clude movie-making, movie scores, pho-
tography, interviewing, and voiceovers.
Regardless of the type of production,
inspiration is key to the creative pro-
cess! Isaiah 12: 2 proclaims, “For the Lord
Jehovah is my strength and my song; he
also is become my salvation.”
Sarah Carson is wife to Jon (nineteen years
of wedded bliss) and proud mom to Grant,
16. She’s been teaching at home for eleven
years. She is a retired deputy sheriff who
enjoys hunting and traveling. When not
traveling, she gets creative, sewing home
decor projects and chalk painting anything
not nailed down. Coffee, dark chocolate,
and popcorn are kept close at hand! Her
favorite music is anything Grant creates.
