Over the next month, my wife was
around other groups of homeschoolers,
and her observation was the same. Most
of the moms just seemed to be home-
schooling as a reaction to something that
had happened at school. From her per-
spective, homeschooling was just one of
the options each year for each kid.
I was sharing our findings with a fel-
low ministry leader and his solution was:
“You need to give the moms convictions
as you travel and speak.”
Honestly, I don’t know how to give
someone else convictions . . . and I’m not
sure I’d be very good at it. But as he talked,
I thought, it’s not my job to give them con-
victions; it’s their husband’s job. He needs
to be the one with the convictions.
So that’s why I’m writing you, Dad. You
need to know why you homeschool because here’s the truth about all these con-viction-less, modern day homeschoolers:
hard times will come, and they’ll look for
any other available option that will ease
their pain.
And, one day your wife will look at
you and ask, “Why do we homeschool,
again?” If you answer her with, “I don’t
know,” or, “Because you wanted to,” you
will have let her down. She wants you to
have conviction, to stand strong in your
conviction, and to remind her of that
conviction.
So Dad, figure it out. Pray, and ask God
to make it clear to both you and your
wife. If you need a little help, go to your
local or state homeschool convention; ask
some older homeschoolers, or talk about
it with your wife. Then when your wife
asks you one day, “So why do we do this?”
you will be able to say, “Because God told
us to. We don’t like what they would be
taught elsewhere. And, we don’t like all
the influences they would be surrounded
by,” and on and on the list will go.
