Yes, that’s a tough one. How will you do
everything that needs to be done each day,
while taking care of Johnny’s needs? I wish
there were a simple answer. One step at
a time is the best I can offer, dear friend.
Sometimes the dishes and laundry will
have to wait. The phone calls can be made
tomorrow. The lawn can get a little shaggy.
You have more important fish to fry today.
Focus on what is important, not on what
Seriously? Your mother-in-law fussed at
you because your house wasn’t perfect? She
does understand what you guys are going
through, right? I wonder how her house
would look if she were walking a mile in
your shoes? I’m so sorry she wasn’t as supportive as she needed to be. The house can
Oh, that’s wonderful that Sam is helping
so much. You married a good man! Don’t
forget that this is very difficult on him, too.
Guys are hard-wired to fix things, and
these medical challenges can’t always be
fixed, at least not quickly. Give each other
lots of space and lots of love.
How have these things impacted our
marriage? Well, my husband has been
a rock through all the surgeries, hospital
stays, doctor appointments, and long, long
days. There have been bumpy patches, but
overall, it’s made our marriage stronger as
we’ve gone through the fire together and
seen God’s consistent, loving hand moving
in our lives.
Yes, we’ve had to find creative ways to
have an actual conversation and to nurture each other. It’s amazing what a kind
word, a hug, a little note, or a quick phone
call can do to cheer us up on a tough day.
Turn to each other for strength, but also let
each other be weak and vulnerable sometimes. How’s your homeschooling going?
You were so smart to scale things back
until life settles down. That was a hard lesson for me to learn! I love how you decided
to do lots of reading with your kids, and
not worry about spelling or grammar for a
while. They will learn so much from reading great books! You said you were trying
some practical math for a while, like practicing fractions while cooking? How’s that
Yes, doubling a cookie recipe is great
motivation to learn fractions! And think
how much your kids are learning about
the miraculous human body through these
medical issues with Johnny. And they are
learning to communicate with different
people as you go to your appointments.
We’ve worried about how we
would meet our other children’s needs,
when so much time and energy is
spent on medical challenges.
“What an amazing big brother!”
“Five precious blessings!”
