Engaging Kids in Critical Math, Science & Programming Skills
through Robotics
The 4-H Robotics curriculum makes science, engineering,
and;technology;engaging;and;meaningful;for;young;people!
The;activities;do;this;by;encouraging;youth;to;use;the;process-
es;science,;the;conceptual;design;of;engineering,;and;the;ap-
plication;of;technology;in;their;personal;portfolios;of;skills;and
abilities. Throughout the Junk Drawer Robotics books, youth
are challenged to build robots from everyday items. Parents
as;coaches;will;use;levels;1,;2,;and;3;to;guide;the;experiences;
youth will use their Robotics Notebook to record learning ex-
periences,;robotic;designs,;and;data;from;investigations.;Two
DVDs;accompany;the;curriculum;set:;Virtual Robotics and Ro-
botics Platforms. The Virtual Robotics DVD allows;participants
to interact in a virtual environment as they learn basic science
and;robotics;concepts;without;investing;in;expensive;materi-
als;or;supplies.;This;track;makes;use;of;videos,;simulations,
animations and other media to convey content in a meaning-
ful and engaging manner. Using the Robotics Platforms DVD,
youth;will;use;commercial;robotics;kit;to;explore;the;world;of
robots.;The;activities;developed;for;this;track;can;be;used;with
a;variety;of;commercial;kits,;including;NXT,;and;Vex.;Appro-
priate;for;grades;4–12,;depending;on;experience.
Students will marvel at
ooey-gooey slime, hair-raising
experiments and the mysteries
behind mad science.
