Did you learn algebra by rote or
with understanding?
...How will you teach your student?
Bear fruit in wisdom
Modern educational methods usually approach mathematics as an isolated discipline, and
higher math as a body of formulas and rules which only the brightest students can grasp.
Long before modern methods were heard of, classical education has proven
otherwise. We believe that no knowledge should be taught in isolation from other
knowledge, and no special aptitude is required to grasp facts and gain
understanding. The key to approaching any subject is to understand the tools of
learning; teaching algebra to your student becomes as simple as gaining the
grammar, demonstrating the form, and then allowing your student to find the
pattern. Practice the pattern. Demonstrate the pattern. Master the idea behind the
pattern. Move on to the next idea. For instance, how are these facts similar?
2( 3 + 6) = 18
2(x + 2x) = y
Can you find the pattern? Each spring, Classical Conversations hosts FREE three-day
parent practicums (whether you are in our programs or not) all across the United
States. This spring we will be discussing math and exactly how these ideas can re-inform
your home school. To learn more, please visit ParentPracticum.com.
